If you’ve never been to Islamorada, you might think it presumptuous to call itself “The Sport Fishing Capital of the World.”
Where else in the world can you go offshore and catch Mahi-mahi, Swordfish, Sailfish, Snappers and Groupers, then head to Florida Bay into what’s known as the Backcountry and catch Bonefish, Redfish, Permit, Snook and Tarpon, all in the same day?
The reason Islamorada is what it is has to do with its location. Islamorada is one of the few places in the world that is home to virtually every species of fish that swims. You can fish somewhere 365 days a year and you can catch every fish in this hemisphere on all types of tackle. Take a look at our Fishing Calendar and pick the day that is more convenient for you.
Florida cannot be beaten as the No. 1 place to cast a line, pitch a lure or land a lunker. No tall fisher’s tale here — this title has been earned, according to a survey by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Every five years the Census Bureau conducts the “National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation.” This survey is the gold standard for comparing outdoor recreational activities between the states. Once again, it proves that Florida is the top fishing destination.

But the story does not end there. Overall, Florida again ranked first in number of fishing participants age 16 and older with 2.77 million.
